What is Etsy?

Etsy is an online marketing platform founded in 2005 by a crafty group of friends in Brooklyn, New York. It was founded by Robert Kalin, Chris Maguire, Haim Schoppik, and Jared Tarbell to create a marketplace for fellow artisans to sell their goods. Two years after it launched, Etsy already reached 450 active sellers.

Fast forward to 2020, Etsy became a popular platform for C2C eCommerce.

Unlike larger-scale platforms like Amazon with a B2B or the Business-to-Business selling approach, Etsy engages in C2C or the Customer-to-Customer system. In C2C, an Etsy seller who is a customer deals with the Etsy buyer who is also considered another customer.

Etsy marked 81 million users and 4.1 million sellers in 2020, where most of the users are women. Etsy became popular among customers because of the variety of items available on the website, including handcrafted jewelry, vintage items, gifts, clothing, beauty products, artworks, and many more. In 2019, there are about 60 million product listings in Etsy from various niches.

Getting started with Etsy as a seller is easy. If you would like to sell, you can begin creating a one-stop shop for your handcrafted items or shop for different products by either opening the website or downloading the application thru your android phone or desktop.

You can start by using your Google account, Apple ID, or Facebook to sign up. Signing up is free, and once registered, you will be prompted to update your profile, choose your location, currency, and name of your Etsy shop. After creating your online marketplace, you can now start creating your listings by selecting the category of the products you are selling.

In creating your listings, it is essential to have high-definition photos, compelling thumbnails, and exact keywords about your items so buyers can easily locate you on Etsy.
