Grab Holdings Inc., or simply Grab, is indeed a Singaporean multinational corporation located in the city-state of Singapore. The company also provides meal delivery and digital payment services via a smartphone app in addition to transportation. It began as the MyTeksi app in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2012, and expanded the following year as GrabTaxi.
Anthony Tan came up with the idea for a Southeast Asian taxi-booking smartphone app, similar to ones being pioneered in the United States, while still at Harvard Business School. Tan established the “My Teksi” app in Malaysia in 2012 alongside Tan Hooi Ling, another Harvard graduate, with the goal of making taxi trips easier and safer in Malaysia. MyTeksi was founded with a US$25,000 grant from Harvard Business School as well as Anthony Tan’s personal funds.
The Grab app uses a location-sharing technology to dispatch taxis and private rental cars to nearby commuters. When this company enters a new market, it purchases smartphones for drivers in each of those countries, allowing them to pay for the phone in daily installments. By collecting a share of the booking fees, the corporation makes a profit.
