Standard office professions operate during regular business hours, such as Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Shift work is used by organizations and businesses that need to function all day and all night, or at least for longer than the standard 8-hour workday.
Shift work happens at periods other than the typical 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule. Morning shifts from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., night shifts from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., as well as a rotating shift schedule incorporating both are all examples of shift work.
